Upon graduation from Wapanucka High School Dessie studied accounting at Draughons Business School in Muskogee, OK, and in 1949 she married Wesley “Freck” Hamer. In her leisure time Dessie enjoyed dancing, shopping and fashion, playing dominoes (especially moon), reading, gardening, and cooking. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed preparing large family meals with love; she was especially famous for her Thanksgiving dressing.
